Murder After Murder: A Review of Mia Manansala's Arsenic and Adobo May 6, 2021 at 7:00 am by L.D. Like a fresh onion about to be added to chicken adobo, this story has layers of secrets, rafts of suspects and ample red herrings to make a nice stew. It was exciting to have a mainstream book that reflected the culture in which I was raised. In the tradition of Agatha Christie, Mia Manansalas debut novel has murder after murder, a large cast of suspects, an evil scheme and a police detective always one step behind the amateur sleuth. People are exposed to elevated levels of inorganic arsenic through drinking contaminated water, using contaminated water in food preparation and irrigation of food crops . I also loved the Filipino American representation in this book, with Manansala allowing her main and side characters to be simultaneously smart, complicated, nurturing, protective, overbearing, and problematic, just as real people are. Since this book was my first cozy, I didnt know to expect this, and I think it would be helpful to the rest of my review if I quickly listed some of the typical conventions of a cozy mystery, many of which this book adopts. Her high-school ex-boyfriend, Derek Winter, comes by to lambast yet another dish in the restaurant but passes out and dies in the hospital. For the most part, I thoroughly enjoyed the book. It's even worse when hot, silver-fox Detective Park accuses Lila of Derek's murder. A light, fun, humorous cozy mystery featuring descriptions of yummy Filipino dishes and warm family moments. Heaving Bosoms Crossover, Part II: The Madness of Lord Ian Mackenzie, 549. I appreciated the dash of romance and the delightful banter involving the aunties, and look forward to the next book in the series! Not only will you be tempted by descriptions of Filipino meals, but also by the many delicacies at the restaurants Lila visits. i think both ARSENIC AND ADOBO and LIKE WATER FOR CHOCOLATE (the film adaptation) do a great job of using food as a metaphor for the characters emotional states. I will say this is a very personal and highly biased review, since there is a lot more joy than I would have guessed in seeing your cultural experience take priority on the page. Im not a big fan of mystery/thrillers in which the reader is always a few steps ahead of the main character; I prefer when I feel like Im solving the case alongside them, feeling surprised and scared in the same moments they are. It took Manansala about a year and a half to finish the book, facing down all the rejections she had received in the past as well as keeping motivated after the death of her father. And let me assure you, the case is nowhere near as clear-cut as it first appears! When Lila Macapagal moves back home to recover from a horrible breakup, her life seems to be following all the typical rom-com tropes. I suspect after a few books, this becomes way more natural for someone new to language or foods. But the hints of other crimes Tempes identification uncovers, particularly crimes against children, spur her on to redouble her efforts despite the new M.E.s splenetic outbursts. 5 Reviews. At first, Lila thinks this is just another example of Dereks boorish sense of humor, but when it becomes clear that hes in acute distress, her family jumps into action to try to revive him while waiting for the ambulance to arrive. Maybe we just dont know enough about the food in the story to pick up on it, but we agree that in ARSENIC AND ADOBO the food is used for the comfort and connection it creates rather than symbolically like in LIKE WATER FOR CHOCOLATE. While healing her wounds from a bad breakup, Lila Macapagal has moved back to the small town of Shady Palms, located somewhere south of Chicago, to assist her family of aging women who run Tita Rosies Kitchen.Much like Three Pines in Louise Pennys novels, you wont find the town on a map of Illinois, but you will swear that you have been there. And Lila and her family certainly get a lot done as a team. The recipes I chose to include were ones that I thought were a good representation of those elements, but also fairly easy to make so that people new to cooking or our cuisine wouldnt be scared off. Dont overmix, it will still be slightly lumpy. The first in the Tita Rosie's Kitchen mystery series, it's about a young woman named Lila Macapagal whose life feels rather like a romantic comedy. The instant salabat mix was a little spicier on the crust than expected, as my poor kids found out to their detriment, so feel free to either go easy on the cayenne in it or sprinkle the spicy stuff on only half of the loaf if youre serving people with a low tolerance for spice.
